Why Psychology Matters in SSB
The Psychologist's assessment carries equal weight to GTO and Personal Interview. And unlike GTO tasks, you cannot rehearse your way through it — your responses must genuinely reflect officer-like qualities. At Atharva Defence Academy, our free SSB training includes multiple psychology practice sessions with feedback from experienced assessors.
TAT — Thematic Apperception Test
12 pictures are shown for 30 seconds each. Write a story with a hero, problem, action, and positive outcome in 4 minutes per picture. Key rules: hero must be positive and proactive; avoid supernatural solutions; make outcomes realistic and socially constructive. Our NDA coaching programme includes TAT writing practice from Month 2.
WAT — Word Association Test
60 words are flashed at 15-second intervals. Write the first positive sentence that comes to mind. Do not pre-memorise sentences — inconsistency across 60 words is detected. Words like "failure", "enemy", "fear" should generate calm, proactive responses.
SRT — Situation Reaction Test
60 situations in 30 minutes. Give a practical, social, and positive response in 1-2 lines. Speed matters — 30 seconds per situation. Practice by writing responses to 10 SRT situations daily for 30 days before SSB.
SD — Self Description
Write what your parents, friends, teachers, and you yourself think of you. Be honest — the Psychologist correlates SD with TAT and WAT for consistency. Ask real people in your life for genuine feedback before writing your SD. Join our SSB training at Garhi Cantt, Dehradun for structured psychology preparation.
