SSB Personal Interview Tips — How to Crack the PI in 2025

Atharva Defence Academy
SSB PI Specialists | Ex-Army Officers

The SSB Personal Interview is 45-60 minutes with a senior officer who has read everything about you. Here is how to walk in fully prepared.

What is the SSB Personal Interview?

The PI (Personal Interview) takes place on Day 3 or 4 of SSB. A senior interviewing officer (IO) — usually a Colonel or above — interviews you for 45-60 minutes based entirely on your PIQ (Personal Information Questionnaire). The IO has your SSB dossier and correlates your answers with your psychology test responses. At Atharva Defence Academy, mock PIs by ex-Army officers are part of our free SSB training.

Fill Your PIQ Carefully

The PIQ is filled on Day 1 of SSB. Every word matters. Be truthful — inconsistencies between PIQ and interview are instantly flagged. Fill details about your family, hobbies, achievements, failures, and reasons for joining the services thoughtfully.

Most Common SSB PI Questions

  • Tell me about yourself — in 2 minutes
  • Why do you want to join the Indian Army/Navy/Air Force?
  • What is happening in [your home state] currently?
  • Name the Chief of Army/Navy/Air Force Staff
  • What will you do if not recommended?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses? (Be honest about weaknesses)
  • Tell me about a time you led a group

The Biggest PI Mistakes

  • Bluffing — senior officers with 20+ years of experience see through it
  • Not knowing current affairs about your home state/district
  • Inconsistency with what you wrote in PIQ or SD
  • Nervous body language — maintain eye contact and sit upright

Our NDA coaching programme includes mock PI sessions from Month 4. Join now.
