What Does the GTO Assess?
The Group Testing Officer observes how you perform in a team — your initiative, cooperation, physical courage, and leadership. GTO tasks account for 1/3rd of the total SSB assessment alongside Psychology and Personal Interview. At Atharva's defence academy in Dehradun, our SSB training replicates all GTO tasks on our PT grounds.
The 9 GTO Tasks — Brief Guide
- 1. Group Discussion (GD): Two rounds — one topic given, one free topic. Contribute logical points without shouting. Quality over quantity.
- 2. Group Planning Exercise (GPE): A complex scenario with multiple victims. Group must plan and execute a solution. Speak up with a clear, logical plan.
- 3. Progressive Group Task (PGT): Outdoor obstacle course — group must cross using helping materials (planks, ropes, drum). Help teammates, don't hog leadership.
- 4. Half Group Task (HGT): Same as PGT but with half the group. More individual contribution visible.
- 5. Individual Obstacles: 10 obstacles to cross in 3 minutes. Scored on number of attempts. Fitness from Atharva's daily PT directly helps here.
- 6. Command Task: You lead 2-3 group members to cross an obstacle. Demonstrates leadership and decision-making.
- 7. Final Group Task (FGT): Like PGT but all GTO observations are complete. Perform consistently.
- 8. Lecturette: 3-minute impromptu speech on a chosen topic. Pick something you know well. Speak confidently and make eye contact.
- 9. Snake Race: Tug of war variant — team spirit and physical fitness.
The Golden GTO Rule
Never argue. Never push a teammate. Always encourage. The GTO is not testing who is strongest — it is testing who makes the team function better. Join our SSB training programme for hands-on GTO practice sessions.
