NDA vs CDS — Which Defence Exam is Right for You?

Atharva Defence Academy
Ex-Army Officers | NDA & CDS Faculty

NDA and CDS both lead to commissioned officer ranks — but they are completely different exams for different stages of education. Here is how to choose.

NDA vs CDS — The Fundamental Difference

NDA is for students appearing in or after Class 12. CDS is for graduates. If you are 17-19 years old, NDA is your path. If you are 21+ with a degree, CDS is your route. Both exams are conducted by UPSC. Atharva's NDA coaching and CDS coaching in Dehradun cover both independently.

Key Differences at a Glance

  • Age: NDA — 16.5 to 19.5 years | CDS — up to 25 years (IMA), 19 to 25 years (OTA)
  • Qualification: NDA — Class 12 | CDS — Graduate degree
  • Exam: NDA — Maths + GAT (900 marks) | CDS — English + GK + Maths (300 marks each)
  • Vacancies: NDA — ~400 per cycle | CDS — ~450 per cycle
  • SSB: Both require SSB interview
  • Commission: Both lead to Permanent Commission

Which is Harder?

NDA competition is intense — lakhs of 17-year-olds appear. CDS has fewer aspirants but higher academic expectations at graduation level. NDA Maths is harder; CDS English and GK are more demanding. Atharva's defence academy in Dehradun has dedicated faculty for each.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose NDA if you are in Class 11-12. Choose CDS if you are in your final year of graduation or already graduated. You cannot attempt NDA after age 19.5. Speak to our counsellor to assess the right path for you.
