IMA vs OTA — The Core Difference
Both IMA (Indian Military Academy, Dehradun) and OTA (Officers Training Academy, Chennai/Gaya) produce Army officers through the CDS exam. The critical difference is the type of commission they grant. At our CDS coaching academy in Dehradun, we guide students through this choice based on their profile and goals.
IMA — Indian Military Academy
- Grants Permanent Commission — full 30-year career in the Indian Army
- 1.5-year training at IMA, Dehradun
- Male candidates only
- Higher vacancy competition vs OTA
- Eligible for all arms and services of the Army
OTA — Officers Training Academy
- Grants Short Service Commission (SSC) — 10-14 years, convertible to PC later
- 49-week training at OTA Chennai or OTA Gaya
- Open to both male AND female candidates
- Easier to qualify due to no Maths paper
- Eligible for infantry, signals, EME, and other arms
Which Should You Choose?
If you want a full 30-year Army career, target IMA. If you want flexibility or are a female candidate, OTA is excellent. Many OTA-commissioned officers subsequently convert to Permanent Commission. Our CDS coaching at Garhi Cantt prepares candidates for both. Speak to a counsellor or call 8707441994.
